Gwaschemasche'e was crushed by
the unexpected death of her mother.
That summer, after graduating from the College Sevigne
she returned home to the Ciragan Palace in Istanbul
for the first time in twelve years and found herself completely alone.
However, this would soon change.
Encountering the young woman during a palace inspection,
54 year old Sultan Abdul-Hamid II was immediately taken by her
unusual beauty and intelligence.
The Sultan soon proposed marriage.
And contrary to her late mothers's wishes, Gwaschemasch'e accepted
becoming the Sultans thirteenth wife.
The traditional, yet opulent lifestyle within the Imperial Harem
marked a drastic change for Gwaschemasch'e.
But like her mother Nedaxe before her, the young bride quickly cast a spell over many in the Imperial household.
Unwilling to leave the eccentric influences of her life in Paris behind,
Gwaschemasch'e revived her interest in neopagism.
The Sultan's advisors became aware of Gwaschemasch'e's
proselytizing efforts when she invited Austrian Runic expert,
Guido von List to lecture in the palace.
Von List, the founder of Armanism, advocated a return to the
fertility worship cults of the ancient Indo Europeans.
The Grand Vizier warned the Sultan that his wife's
heretical activities would play directly into his enemies' hands.
Concerned, the Sultan confronted Gwaschemasch'e,
kindly insisting that she stop.
However, Gwaschemasch'e's interests were only temporarily subdued.
Not more than a year later,
the princess made a pilgimage to the fertility temples in Malta.
On June 21, 1905 Gwaschemasch'e presided over eloborate rites
celebrating the Summer Solstice.
Adorned as the "Mother Goddess" herself, Gwaschemasch'e purified
the virgin females in her retinue by ritual cleansing.
Of central importance in the ceremony - the pious offered
gifts to the sun for the return of the Goddess' sacred child to earth.
This occurrence, along with rumors that the Sultan participated
in some observances, caused a huge scandal…

Years of military setbacks and rampant government corruption
set the stage for revolt.
On Juky 23, 1908 the Young Turk revolutionaries
marched on the capital, demanding the restoration of the constitution
and the freeing of all political prisoners.
The Sultan's position was reduced to that of a mere figurehead.
As a price for continued state protection and subsidies to
the Sultan's household, The Young Turks demanded that his apostate wife
be expelled from the country.
Despite the Sultan's protests,
Gwaschemasch'e agreed to leave for Europe.
However, on the evening of August 5, while making
arrangements for her departure, the princess went missing.
She was never seen or heard from again.
What really happened to this charismatic
and controversial younf woman?
Did this ancient line of the Circassians end with her?
Was seh murdered by champions of Turkish nationalism?
Circumstantial evidence suggests that German agents arranged
Gwaschemasch'e's mysterious disappearance as a cover to
keep her hidden from her enemies.
According to this theory, Gwaschemasch'e was taken to
a secret location somewhere in Germany where she lived under an
assumed identity. Such an arrangement was entirely possible.
German influence in the Ottoman Empire remained
substantial up until the revolution.
Gwaschemasch'e's mentor, Guido von List, enjoyed
close ties with several hig-level officials
in the Kaiser's government.
In July of 1909, a full year after her disappearance,
Von List had just returned from a trip to Munich when he wrote to his colleague Lanz von Liebenfels, that
"our Prinzesschen appeared to be of good health and spirits."
The term Prinzesschen or "little Princess" is a direct
translation of Gewaschemasch'e from Circassian into German.
One more thread of intriguing evidence: New York Herald writer
and German master spy Frederick Duquesne was in
Instanbul at times of Gwaschemasche's disappearance.
